Grace
Kuraska

Creaking like a quiet abandoned house, Grace Kuraska hauntingly pines over lost love in her newest single, 'favorite ghost'.

Released just in time for Valentine's Day, 'favorite ghost' digs into the all too familiar feeling of being haunted by a lost love. Grace Kuraska was born to be a songwriter. Despite shying away from releasing music at first, her recent singles have proven her singer-songwriter style has blossomed. With an achingly warble on her vocals, the emotion behind each word is felt. She croons, 'sometimes when I fall asleep / I ask to see you in my dreams', - it's a heart wrenching moment before the chorus, packing an emotional punch in the gut.

Produced with Grace Gardner (another GRRRL Music fav!), the two beautifully worked to bring this acoustic song to life. While stripped down, there is still so much to hear in each note, whether it's the mini-breakdown on guitar, Grace's emotions pouring through her voice, or just those little bites of lyrics that'll knock you back - 'favorite ghost' is one of Grace Kuraska's best.

GRRRL Music: You have such a unique voice and style—how did you first discover your love for music, and what drew you to songwriting?

Grace Kuraska: Music was playing constantly in my house growing up. My parents introduced me to a wide range of artists from so many different genres/decades. So my love for music was always there. And I also loved to write stories, so eventually those two passions combined and I started writing song lyrics.

GM: Your new single, "Favorite Ghost," has such an intimate, reflective quality. Can you share the inspiration behind the song and what it means to you?

GK: I was just thinking about how it seems to be harder getting over something that never really came into fruition, because you can idealize what could’ve been versus actually seeing the (probably disappointing) reality of it. I liked the idea of being haunted by the potential of someone or something, and so I sat down and wrote this song.

GM: You collaborated with Grace Gardner on the production—what was that creative process like, and how did they help shape the song’s final sound?

GK: Oh my god, it was so cool!! I was already a fan of Grace’s work, so it was super exciting to work together. They really took the time to make sure my vision was being realized in the production aspect (and it absolutely was obviously!!) Grace totally made the song something greater than I imagined. Such a hugely talented person!! In Grace Gardner we trust!

GM: Do you see "Favorite Ghost" as part of a larger project, or does it stand alone as a personal statement at this moment in time?

GK: My hope is for it to be a part of a larger project! But that’s still TBD for now so…stay tuned….maybe.

GM: If "Favorite Ghost" were part of a soundtrack to a movie, what kind of scene do you picture it playing in?

GK: Fabulous question. I could see it in an angsty YA fantasy or dystopian (aka I’m literally only thinking of the Twilight saga). Maybe an indie coming-of-age. Or, like, the really introspective scene after a dramatic fight in a romcom.
