Concert Review: Weston Estate at The Novo

Dec 1, 2024

Rachel

Weston Estate, self-branded as “ya aunty’s favorite boy band,” has been carving out a unique space in the indie music scene since 2017. Hailing from North Carolina, the band comprises Marco Gomez, Tanmay Joshi, Abhi Manhass, Srikar Nanduri, and Manas Panchavati. Their sound effortlessly blends alt-indie vibes, bedroom pop intimacy, and even touches of lo-fi aesthetics.

Having discovered them a few months ago, I’ve been hooked on their rough-yet-refined production and heartfelt lyrics. Needless to say, their show at The Novo on October 22, part of their SUPERBLOOM TOUR, was one of my most anticipated concerts of 2024—and I’ve attended over 40 live shows this year alone!

As a Southeast Asian individual myself, seeing such meaningful representation on stage made this event even more special. The moment I stepped into the venue, I felt a sense of belonging and excitement that only grew stronger as the night progressed. The band’s chemistry was palpable, radiating artistry and authenticity. From the first chord to the final note, it was clear that Weston Estate has a rare ability to connect deeply with their audience.

The crowd at The Novo was a mystery in itself—and I mean that in the best way possible. Who knew a room could hold such a delightfully mismatched group of people? Teenagers with dyed hair and vintage tees stood beside parents who probably started out as chauffeurs but ended up rocking harder than anyone else. Then there were folks like me, somewhere in the middle, just trying to process the pure magic happening on stage. Weston Estate’s crowd is a reflection of their charm: multifaceted, unpredictable, and unreasonably fun. Watching everyone come alive under the band’s spell felt like being in on a really great inside joke—equal parts heartwarming and hilarious. They have this uncanny ability to make every lyric and riff feel like a shared secret, the kind you’re giddy to tell your friends about but also kind of want to keep to yourself.

Their setlist was a carefully curated journey through their discography, showcasing tracks like "So Good,", Silence", "Camouflage," and highlights from their standout 2022 EP, Maggie Valley. A surprise highlight was their cover of “FourFiveSeconds” by Kanye West, Paul McCartney, and Rihanna, which they infused with their own distinctive flair. Each performance felt intimate yet electrifying, underscoring their natural talent and easygoing charisma. These five musicians bring a light-hearted yet deeply artistic essence to the stage that is simply unmatched.

By the time the final song played, I sprinted to the merch booth—a sentiment shared by what seemed like half the audience. We all wanted a keepsake from this unforgettable night, proof that we were part of something magical. I left the venue emotional, already searching for their next tour dates and wondering when I could relive the experience.

Weston Estate’s rise feels inevitable. While a selfish part of me wants to keep them a hidden gem, I know their talent is too immense to stay under the radar for long. So here’s to ya aunty’s favorite boy band!
