On a cloudy Saturday in Brooklyn at the iconic 3 Dollar Bill, GRRRL Music co-hosted, along with HDA Management, Queer Music Agency and Ronin, 'Sad Girl Hours'. The event aimed to provide educational hours on all things music industry, providing support & networking without the pressure of a 'conference' vibe. After filling our brains with all that knowledge, we got a well-deserved break with incredible live performances from some NYC up & coming 'Sad Girls'.
Aliya & Emily from Queer Music Agency started with a presentation on how to book yourself as an independent artist, laying out the steps of networking, who to contact, how to even start booking yourself! While it may seem overwhelming at first, the best way to start is by looking at your own community. Where are artists playing that are at your same level? Networking and introducing yourself is key to start building relationships with bookers, and the best advice at the end of the day is to be kind, be patient, but keep persevering! Jason Jordan was our next speaker, a music industry vet, Jordan spoke to the audience about his incredible journey from starting a punk label at 14 to his tenures at places like Disney, Urban Outfitters, and more. Distribution is a highly intriguing mystery to most artists, Jason really broke down the importance of artist development, asking the question, is a label even right for you as an artist right now. You can find more about earthprogram HERE!
Next up, our very own Kelsey of GRRRL Music sat with Liz Miller from Meta to discuss social media strategy, what actually helps artists on platforms like Instagram, and tools artists can use to build community! Liz Miller works with artists on strategy and partnerships and has a wealth of knowledge, recommending artists to use tools like broadcast channels to keep their fanbase up to date with either releases or what daily life looks like. Kelsey used her knowledge of social media strategy to discuss content creation, telling your story as an artist and how to not burn out. If you're an artist looking to develop a social media strategy, GRRRL Music now has a digital Artist Educational Toolkit that will help you navigate all of this, you can find it here! Also check out a little clip of Kelsey speaking about building community below!
Next up, we were so lucky to watch Matthew from Ronin and Eunique from Empire Sync discuss everything about sync licensing and the importance of artists working with sync supervisors! Music is used in everything, from film & tv to brands, it is so important for artists to understand the process of submitting music to sync companies. Matthew and Eunique were incredible hosts, allowing the audience to really get a basic understanding of how and why sync placements can be a big deal for musicians. It creates the opportunity for artists to not only be 'discovered', but also it is another lane for artists to make money. If you're looking for more information, you can find Matthew's company, Ronin, here! Or you can check out Eunique's company, Empire Sync, here!
To end the educational day, Kelsey spoke once more about what PR looks like in modern day. She tackles the common questions for artists like 'how to do PR myself', 'should I hire a PR company', and how to use social media along with PR to create a successful campaign. With PR being a bit of a sticky subject, Kelsey discussed the pros and cons of working with a company, noting that even if you work with a PR company, they cannot guarantee placement. However, PR companies can help you build your brand, work with you to create a strategy and help with the outreach of your campaign. There's a lot to it and again, if you're looking for more information, we suggest taking a look at our Artist Educational Toolkit!
Finally, we were treated to an incredible session of live performances from resident NYC sad girls! Every artist brought a delicious energy to 3 Dollar Bill, not only showing off their stunning voices but bringing the VIBES to the stage. From L - R: Megagonefree, Eph See, Butta, Matty Marz
A major thank you to everyone who attended Sad Girl Hours, to all of our speakers and artists who performed! We're so appreciative of the collaborative nature the music industry can create, and we look forward to doing many more of these types of events!
